Luxury Hotels
If you’re wealthy, then perhaps you stay at luxury hotels often. If so, then you no doubt are aware of the customs and practices that go along with that. However, some individuals or families don’t stay at upscale hotels very often when they travel. If that is the case, then you should know what you’re going to encounter and be ready for it when you get there. Here are 4 things to consider when staying in luxury hotels:
Staying at a Luxury Hotels with a Baby
Today, 86% of women aged 40-44 are mothers, which means that if you’re in this demographic or younger, the chances are high that you’re going to travel with a baby at some point. If you’re staying at a family luxury hotel, there are certain accommodations that you might be able to expect that may not necessarily be the case at the average Best Western.
One of the real differences between fancier hotels and cheaper ones is that you can call the concierge, and they’ll be happy to supply you with a lot more than just room service. This means that if you’ve forgotten something like diapers or a pacifier, they should have no trouble obtaining it for you. Expect the cost to be added to your bill, but it’s nice to know that the hotel staff will take great care of you and your baby.
Don’t Tip till the End of Your Stay
Tipping the staff is something that can be a little confusing if you’re not used to staying at upscale hotels. There are a couple of things to remember if you’re feeling uncertain about the practice.
The first point that has to be made is that in some cultures, it is considered bad form to tip. Throughout most of Asia, for instance, you are not supposed to tip the hotel staff. In fact, they regard it disrespectful. If you’re going to be staying in a fancy luxury hotel in another country, do a little research to see if tipping is expected.
If you’re in the US, and you’ll be staying at a luxury hotel for multiple nights, then you should leave a tip for the janitorial staff as you check out. You don’t need to tip them every day.
For high-end hotels, a tip of $5 for each night you stayed would be appropriate. If several people stayed in the room, you should leave more. You should also leave a bigger tip if you happened to leave the room in a particularly messy condition.
The Concierge at Luxury Hotels Are Extremely Knowledgable
The concierge at any hotel is there to answer questions you might have. However, at luxury hotels, there is more that they can do for you.
The staff at expensive hotels are expected to know a great deal about the city in which the hotel is located. It would not be inappropriate to ask them about the following:
- The Best Restaurants
- The Best Nightclubs
- Museums
- Cultural Sites
The concierge can also do things like arrange taxi or limo pick up, or they can instruct you on the best forms of public transportation to take you to tourist destinations. Don’t be hesitant to ask them. That is part of the reason they are there, and they should be gracious in assisting you.
You Still Have to Pay for Extras at Luxury Hotels
You probably already know that candy, chips, sodas, or other treats that you find in a hotel minibar are added to your bill. You might think that’s not the case with more expensive hotels. However, the same rules still apply.
Unless bottles of water and other drinks, snacks, and the like that you find in your room are specifically labeled as being complimentary, you can expect them to be added to your bill if you indulge.
The same is true if you take a towel or a bathrobe home with you. You might be staying in the lap of luxury for a few days, but the hotel will still be keeping track of any additional expenditures and adding them to your bill.
Overall, staying at a fancy luxury hotel can be the experience of a lifetime, especially if it’s something you don’t get to do very often. There are some hotels that are every bit as breathtaking as the most popular tourist attractions in the city in which they are located. If you do stay at one, then enjoy yourself, but be sure to act with the proper etiquette.

That’s good to know that the concierge could help you with things like finding stuff for the kids to do. I am thinking about taking the family on a trip this summer, and I would want to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves. If we decide to stay at a hotel, I’ll have to ask the concierge about that so we can take the kids to do things the like as well.
