A Relaxing Weekend Getaway at Holiday Inn Resort in Jekyll Island
Surprisingly, not many people are familiar with Jekyll Island, even Georgians. When I mentioned I was going, a lot of people assumed I meant Tybee Island! If you have never heard of Jekyll Island before, it is located off the coast of Southern Georgia and is part of a group of barrier islands known as the Golden Isles. Jekyll Island is about a twenty-minute drive from St. Simons and an hour and a half south of Savannah. It is more or less a 5-hour drive from Atlanta, so it makes a great weekend getaway.
Earlier this year we spent a beautiful weekend in St. Simons Island but to our dismay, we only had the chance to visit Jekyll Island for the day. When we were invited back for a return visit down to the Golden Isles, we were grateful and excited to have the opportunity to experience Jekyll Island for more than just a day trip. Huge thanks to the Holiday Inn Resort for hosting my family. I received a complimentary stay to help facilitate my review but as always, all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
Jekyll Island is owned by the State of Georgia; once belonging to the French and Spanish, this island was opened to the public in 1954. To enter onto the island, you must pay a $6 daily toll. You do have the option of purchasing an annual pass if you visit frequently. The Island is only seven miles long and 1.5 miles wide. You will not find high- rise hotels, shopping malls, and chain restaurants here. So this island is not your typical commercialized beach destination. It’s a great escape from the hubbub of city life. The Jekyll Island Authority has really done an excellent job to preserve this barrier island and limit development on the land.
Holiday Inn Resort – Both Comfort and Luxury
If you are looking for accommodations on Jekyll Island, you will find several options. However, we stayed at The Holiday Inn Resort, an IHG brand hotel. This hotel is located mostly beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean. Many rooms will have an oceanfront view. With a recent facelift, you will find stylish modern decor, with shades of ocean-blue and greens.
The lobby offers comfortable seating, updated furniture, and a sleek design. You are greeted with friendly staff that will provide you excellent service and southern charm. Through the lobby, we were mostly drawn towards the gorgeous oceanfront view and the beautifully manicured grounds. When you step on the grounds of the Holiday Inn Resort on Jekyll Island, you will be surrounded by a lush landscape, palm trees, gorgeous oceanfront views, inviting paved bike lanes, a family friendly playground, and outdoor lounging chairs.
Most importantly, you will be in awe with the breathtaking oceanfront view. Trust me, you will not be staying in your room long because you will want to enjoy the outdoor area as much as possible.
After a busy day of fun on the island, we enjoyed hanging out at the pool and hot tub for relaxation. We were thrilled when we discovered the pool was even heated!
While you are lounging at the pool, you can enjoy the amazing views of the ocean. There is plenty of shade as well as seating for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without putting on a swimsuit. Aside from the pool, there is a tiki bar where you can enjoy a variety of spirits, drinks, and food.
This resort offers spacious rooms with your choice of one king or two queen beds, as well as two-room suites. We stayed in a two queen bedroom which was the perfect space for our family of four. Our room was equipped with a coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, iron, hair dryer, and flat screen television.
We stayed on the first floor and had a small outside patio area facing the pool with a partial ocean view. If you stay on the second floor, you will have an outside private balcony with stunning views of the ocean.
Every morning, my mother and I would sneak out and head upstairs for coffee on the third floor where NorthShore Coffee and Martini Bar is located. You are greeted with friendly staff who will serve you fresh muffins or danishes if you desire, for a small fee. They do offer complimentary unlimited coffee which is quite delicious, I might add. We would enjoy our cup of coffee and muffin every morning out on the balcony while admiring the spectacular views.
Although we did not experience any dining on property, the Beachhouse restaurant is conveniently located next door. They specialize in Fresh Local Seafood, Housemade Pizza, and Craft Beer.
We did enjoy some live music Saturday night with a glass of wine in their outdoor seating area and open patio.

Holiday Inn Resort – Great Option For Families Visiting Jekyll Island
With its prime oceanfront location and spacious accommodations, the Holiday Inn Resort offers a great option for families visiting Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island is a wonderful place to relax and explore. The new favorite destination for my family is truly this beautiful area of the southern region of Georgia. There is no wonder why this island has been featured on Southern Living as the Top 10 South’s Best Islands for 2017.
