Growing up, the homemade banana pudding was always a regular dessert. No matter what dinner was, banana pudding always seemed to be the perfect ending. How many times have you bought bananas, but missed the mark of getting them eaten before they got a little too ripe?
There are wonderful benefits of bananas. Does it count if you make pudding? Why, of course, it does! With this Homemade Banana Pudding recipe, you’ll never have to worry about wasting your bananas ever again.
Your kids will think it’s a “treat” and not even realize that they’re filling their bellies full of goodness. Best part, a little bit of this recipe will go a long ways!
Ingredients for homemade banana pudding:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3 cups milk
- 4 egg yolks, beaten
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 bananas, sliced and cut into quarters
- vanilla wafer cookies
- whipped cream (optional)
How to make banana pudding:
- Add sugar and cornstarch to a saucepan and mix well.
- Stir in milk and heat over medium-low heat until thick and bubbly, stirring if not constantly than very frequently.
- Remove from heat and stir in eggs. Return to oven and heat until you have a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low and continue to heat for 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
- Pour into a glass bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let set to cool before refrigerating for 4-6 hours or overnight.
- When pudding is cool, mix in chopped bananas.
- Place wafer cookies into small trifle bowls and spoon pudding on top. I usually always use Nabisco Nilla Wafers.
- Add 1 crushed cookie to each serving and top with whipped cream.
Don’t forget the extra dollops of whipped cream here and there and if you’re feeling really adventurous, add some shredded coconut or sliced almonds as a fun treat, too! While those little additions aren’t necessary, they’re a super simple and fun way to give this banana pudding a fun twist each and every time.
