What Does Flex Mean?

What does Flex mean?

Flex is a slang term used to describe when someone is showing off and is often used ironically. It comes from the term “flexing biceps” which is how men have traditionally shown off that they are strong or impressive.

Although flex is most commonly used on the internet, it is common to hear Gen Z and Gen A using it in person in conversation. It is mostly used in informal settings.

How to use Flex

  • “Sick flex bro.”
  • “What a flex”
  • “Why don’t you flex some more?”
  • “Check out this flex.”
  • “Girls love this flex.”
  • Flex is used to describe when someone is showing something off.

Using Flex the right way

Flex is a difficult slang term to use because it is used as a noun when traditionally it is an adjective. It is used to make the action of showing something off into an intangible object.

For example, if someone is showing off the money in their wallet, a friend could respond with “That’s your flex? Ridiculous.” The friend is insinuating that showing money is a flex, but not one that they believe in.

Flex Variations

Flex can also be used as an adjective in the phrase, “Looks like someone is flexing,” when they are doing something ridiculous for the purpose of showing off. There are no other known variations.

Should you worry about your child using Flex?

Flex is considered a harmless slang term; however, it might be a good idea to ensure your child is using it appropriately. Ensure they are using flex only in a kind way or to describe themselves and not to bully others. If they are using flex to be mean, it may be a good idea to discuss with them how internet bullying can be harmful.
