Pirates of Penzance Opera

My friend Kim & I have never been to an opera. I was so excited to receive an invite to the Pirates of Penzance presented by The Atlanta Opera. I love anything with comedy and romance and I have always been fascinated with pirate stories. This opera was the best of both worlds.  I felt it was a wonderful introduction  to the beauty & appreciate of what Opera offers. I encourage everyone to experience Opera at least once in their life.

The performance was broken up into two Acts and lasted approx 2 hours. I personally would not recommend this opera to younger children. In fact, I saw very few children there. The dress attire for the evening was semi-formal. I actually felt a little under dressed for the evening.

The singing was beautiful but if I had to pick a favorite performer, I would have to say definitely Mabel – played by Maureen McKay.  Her voice was so majestic, her beauty so mesmerizing, and her character so powerful and lovely. I looked forward to hearing her sing throughout.

Frederic, played by Matthew Newlin, was the main character.  The story line revolves around his pirate obligations torn between the love for Mabel.  When meeting Mabel, he wanted to leave his pirate life behind as he thought he had fulfilled his obligations.   However, his pirate mates stir the course and trick him into thinking he has not completed his pirate apprenticeship yet based on his age and birthday falling on a leap year.  Of course, he falls for their ridiculous trickery and promises Mabel to return one day. Her love for him remains strong.  The story line will keep you giggling throughout .    I won’t spoil the surprise at the end.

Have you ever been to an Opera. If so,  which one?
