Jewelry is a wonderful well to add personality and uniqueness to an outfit, but many people don’t take the time to incorporate jewelry into their personal style. While some of this may come down to jewelry being intimidating (with so many styles out there, who even knows where to begin?), it could also be because starting a jewelry collection is expensive!

DIY Earring Ideas

There’s good news, though: if you are even just a little bit artistically inclined, you can make your own jewelry, and earrings are a great place to start. Here is a selection of our favorite DIY earring tutorials from all over the internet.

Two-Color Tassels

Tassels are such a fun fashion accessory and a great way to add a touch of whimsy to even the plainest wardrobes. While most popular in the 1970s, tassels have come back recently in a big way and are now a prominent feature in jewelry designs, including earrings. While you could certainly purchase tassel earrings of your own at a store, it is more economical to make your own. Find a great tutorial for two-color tassels here.

Lego

Who doesn’t love lego? If you grew up playing with this beloved toy, then the chances are that you have some loose legos lying around. So here’s your chance to finally pay homage to your favorite toy in a very fashion-forward way. Legos are already the perfect size for earrings; all you have to do is attach them to some kind of fastener which will allow you to hang them from your ears.

Clouds

Clouds are one of the most beautiful naturally-occurring phenomena in nature, so it makes sense that they would also make the perfect inspiration for jewelry. You can make your tiny cloud earrings by following the tutorial that is outlined here.

Buttons

We are trying to resist the urge to announce that these earrings are “cute as a button,” but look at them! They are as cute as buttons go. These also happen to be some of the easiest DIY earrings that you could possibly make. You can use whichever buttons that you have lying around—matching or not! Check it out here.

Polymer Clay

Polymer is a type of special modeling clay that hardens quickly. This property makes it the ideal ingredient in crafting or jewelry making. One great thing about polymer clay is that you can use it to form any shape that you would like in any color that you would like. You can then add small designs to your earring by painting them on. See a beautiful example of this here.

Macrame Earrings

Macrame is most commonly used as a wall decoration, but did you know that it is also possible to use macrame to make other crafts? The word “macrame” refers to the basic technique, which uses textiles to create various patterns. Macrame is usually associated with large craft projects, but you can use it to make earrings, too! See an example of this here.

Keys

Now here’s a way never to lose your house key! Just kidding. You shouldn’t use your house key as earrings, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use other decorative earrings as jewelry. Look at the cute earrings that can be made out of keys!

Zippers

While we’re on the topic of keys, let’s look at other everyday materials that can be used to make jewelry. Another great accessory to use is zippers! If you have ever dabbled in sewing, you probably already have some zippers laying around. Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can make them into earrings.

Pastel rainbow color

There are few things that bring as much joy as a rainbow of color! If you are looking for a unique pair of rainbow earrings, do we ever have a pair for you. The fact that these are made from little puzzle pieces just makes them even cuter.

Strawberries

One of the easiest ways to make your earrings is through using polystyrene, a synthetic material that turns into a durable glass-like texture when heated. You might be most familiar with polystyrene from using it in a childhood craft kit, like Shrinky Dinks. These crafts would usually allow the user to use paint or markers to create a design on a sheet of polystyrene and then bake that in the oven for a while to come out with a ready to use design.

You can easily make any shape into earrings through the use of polystyrene, but we thought that these strawberry earrings were especially cute.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms make some of the cutest decorations out there, and now you can use them in earring form! These mushroom earrings are also made from polystyrene that has been fused together. It’s a bit more challenging than making flat polystyrene earrings, but the end result is worth it. You can buy them online but you can also make them yourself. They look straight out of a fairytale!

Beaded Hoops

It’s about time that we mention beads! Beads are incredibly versatile and can be used to make a great variety of earrings. However, one of our favorite earring types involves combining a plain classic hoop with beads to create beautiful beaded earrings. This is definitely one of the easiest earring tutorials that we have on this list. Check it out here.

Puzzle Pieces

Here is another puzzle piece earring tutorial! It is the perfect craft idea for anyone who both a) does a lot of puzzles and b) has a cat, because if you check “yes” to both of those boxes you are sure to have a few loose puzzle pieces lying around without a home! Now you can upcycle them into your next favorite pair of earrings.

Antique Razor Blades

Razor blades are probably not an item that you were expecting to show up on this list, but vintage dull razor blades actually make a unique and beautiful earring accessory (that are also maybe even a little bit goth). This is a true commitment to upcycling. Check out the tutorial here.

Doll Shoes

This pair of earrings is so incredibly cute we can barely even handle it! Remember the doll shoes that came along with Barbies and other small dolls that we played with as children? If you still have some lying around, you can easily make them into a pair of adorable earrings. Check it out here.

Fruit Slice

Whether you are basing this pair of earrings off of a pair of real fruit, or a piece of candy that is designed to look like fruit, it will work either way. Make them yourself by following this comprehensive guide.

Faux Leather

Some of the handmade earrings on this list look a little bit handmade, but that’s okay. Sometimes that just adds to part of the charm! But if you are looking for a pair of earrings that you can make that will look like they were purchased at a high-end store, you should check out this tutorial here. These faux leather earrings look like something that would sell for top dollar at an arts and crafts market.

Ice Cream Bars

Who doesn’t love ice cream bars? If you really love ice cream bars, now you can enjoy them in earring form. We can’t get over how cute these little ice cream bar earrings are. Perfect for the summertime!

Brass Hands

We love brass jewelry, and it helps that it happens to be one of the easiest kinds of jewelry to make! We love how adorable and slightly bizarre these earrings are that have been molded into the shape of hands.

Wooden and Colorful

Here is another beautiful example of colorful DIY earrings! These small wooden ornaments present the perfect canvas for your making your own personalized designs. You can follow the design that they have carved out in the tutorial or use your own.

Gold-Plated

Gold-plated jewelry is beautiful but oftentimes expensive. Fortunately, you can make your own DIY goldplated earrings with the help of this easy-to-follow tutorial. All it basically takes is some old earrings, gold sheets, and acrylic paint.

Shells

Do you love visiting the beach? Now you can carry a little piece of the beach with you — literally, with these DIY shell earrings. So quaint and darling!

Once you get into the habit of accessorizing with earrings, you’re never going to want to stop! Which earring project are you the most excited to take on on the next rainy afternoon?
